7 Foods That Harm Your Thyroid

Hypothyroidism, in all its versions, is very common today. Yet many women may suffer from it without even knowing it.

If you notice several of the following symptoms, go to your doctor and, as a precautionary measure, take special care with the foods and habits that we explain in just a little bit:

  • Hoarseness that takes weeks - or even months - to disappear
  • Feeling very tired as soon as you wake up
  • Noticing that no diet (no matter how healthy and balanced it is) makes you lose weight
  • Never sweating
  • Having a puffy face or suffering from constipation could be warning you that your thyroid gland (located in the neck) is working slowly.

Keep in mind that many hypothyroidisms are detected after the age of 50. Some symptoms are often mistaken for signs of menopause.

Probably the first food to reduce is soy. Its isoflavones prevent, especially from the age of 50, your body from making thyroid hormones.

Coffee in Moderation

Drinking two cups a day brings you multiple benefits, it even improves your circulation.

But if you suffer from hypothyroidism (your thyroid is slow) and you are taking medication, do not mix the drug with coffee because it prevents its absorption. Allow at least two hours to pass between drinking coffee and taking thyroid medicine.

Keep Peanuts to a Minimum

Peanuts are one of the foods that have goitrogens, substances that are naturally found in various foods and that interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. This means that they can prevent the thyroid from making the necessary hormones.

What you must remember is that they have a goitrogenic effect, like soy. You should also reduce their consumption since they can lead to the elimination of thyroxine (T4) through the feces. This recommendation also applies to isoflavone supplements.

The most harmful part of the peanut is the husk, so peel them before consuming.

Gluten, Yes or No?

Some studies have associated gluten and hypothyroidism.

If you have thyroid problems, reduce your intake of gluten and choose cereals that do not contain this protein, such as rice (better than whole wheat), quinoa,  or corn cereals.

Cabbages, Always Steamed

Crucifers should not be dispensed with because they are a magnificent food, but you should not eat them raw.

More and more people are consuming them uncooked because it satisfies them and their stomach assimilates them well. However, this type of vegetable contains compounds with a goitrogenic effect.

In case of hypothyroidism, it should be taken moderately and always cooked.

The same recommendation applies with broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

Beware of Radishes

They are antioxidants and cleansers, but they do not suit you if you have hypothyroidism as they also contain goitrogens.

Instead, you can consume fermented carrots or cook them to reduce their negative effect.

Yucca and Sweet Potato

They have substances that compete with iodine, essential for the function of the thyroid.

As a recommendation, the yucca can be taken pureed and the sweet potato must be well cooked.

Less Liver in Your Life

If you eat liver too often, its alpha lipoic acid can interfere with hypothyroid drugs.

Therefore, our recommendation is that you reduce your consumption.
